SUMMER ROUND ADMISSIONS FOR NEW RESIDENTS

Eighth grade students who become residents of a participating school division after September 30, 2008 are eligible to apply to TJHSST during a second round of selection (called "Summer Round") provided that they are resident in, and enrolled in school in, a participating school division before June 1, 2009. (See also Residency Requirement section below.)

Summer Round is available only for eighth graders who are newly moved to a participating school division, provided that the applicant is applying from a school division that has not exceeded its attendance cap for the Class of 2013. If you do not live in Fairfax County, you should check with the Admissions Office in early May 2009 to make sure that the school division in which you live has not exceeded its cap for the Class of 2013. If the cap has been exceeded, we will not accept applications from students living in that school division.

WINTER ROUND ELIGIBLE STUDENTS MAY NOT APPLY DURING SUMMER ROUND

Students who lived in a participating school division before September 30, 2008 and missed the October 24, 2008 application deadline may not apply through Summer Round. Those students are only eligible to apply for admission to the sophomore class at TJHSST at the end of their freshman year of high school (summer 2010).

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

All applicants to TJHSST must, at the time of application, live with a parent or legal guardian who resides full time in, and meets the residency requirements of, a school division that participates in TJHSST. (FCPS Regulation 3355.9) The applicant and the parent/legal guardian, therefore, must actually reside (be present) in the participating school division at the time of application. An exception is provided for military and state department (foreign service) families with orders only.

Contact the Admissions Director at Judith Howard for additional information regarding required proof of residency.

PREREQUISITE COURSES FOR SUMMER ROUND APPLICATION

Summer Round applicants to the freshman class at TJHSST must be enrolled in Algebra 1 or a higher level math course in grade 8 to apply to TJHSST. The student must be taking a full-year of high school algebra. Algebra 1, Part A does not satisfy the math prerequisite for freshman application.

No waivers of the Algebra 1 requirement are available for Summer Round Applicants.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The application deadline for the Summer Round is Monday, June 1, 2009. This is a firm deadline. No late applications are accepted.

Summer Round applicants must submit a completed application form, Student Information Sheet, and three teacher recommendations when they apply. These forms will be available in late January 2009. Please contact the Admissions Office at that time to request an application packet.

Please Note: Summer Round applicants also must submit copies of their 7th grade middle school transcripts or final report cards and 8th grade transcripts or report cards from all schools attended in grade 8 (unless your current school transcript reflects marks earned throughout the entire eighth-grade year) with their applications. If you are relocating from overseas between September 30, 2008 and June 1, 2009, make sure that you hand carry all middle school report cards and transcripts and other school-related materials. Do not pack any documents for shipment that you will be unable to access during June 2009.

TESTING

All Summer Round applicants must sit for the Thomas Jefferson Admissions Test on Monday, June 8, 2008. There is no alternate test date. For more information on the admissions test, go to Testing and Test Prep.

SUMMER ROUND SELECTION PROCES

The evaluation and selection process for Summer Round is the same as the Winter Round process described in Freshmen, but is compressed into a one-month time frame. Therefore, it is imperative that all required paperwork (i.e., transcripts, reports cards, teacher recommendations) be submitted with the application.

By regulation, we are required to have seats available for students who apply during the Summer Round admissions process. Those seats, however, are not guaranteed. Summer Round applicants must be rated comparably to students accepted for admission during the Winter Round of admissions in order to be offered admission to TJHSST in the summer.

Final Summer Round admissions decisions will be mailed on June 30, 2009.
