Outreach

In accordance with our mission, Jefferson continues to sponsor outreach activities to communities both near and far. Some past and present examples include the following:

  • Guests are welcome to visit Jefferson, are provided with an overview of the history and philosophy of the school, and are taken on a tour of the building by students or staff. Further information is available at our visitors page;
  • Jefferson and George Mason University's Krasnow Institute are developing collaborative initiatives to further the educational opportunities for staff and students at both institutions. A presentation made in December of 2003 introduces these initiatives.
  • Jefferson continues to assist with the annual Fairfax County Fair and the International Children's Festival at Wolftrap;
  • Students from Jefferson provide tutoring and mentoring services to nearby elementary and middle schools;
  • Jefferson staff partners with the Office of Overseas Schools in the United States State Department to offer an annual technology conference for educators called JOSTI (Jefferson Overseas Schools Technology Institute), held in June;
  • Staff and students at Jefferson collaborated with MCW and Blackboard.com to provide distance and distributed learning capabilities to the International School of Islamabad in Pakistan in the year following the 9/11 attacks;
  • Jefferson continues to work with schools in the Near East, South Asia region (NESA) the Office of Overseas Schools and Blackboard in support of the NESA VirtualSchool.
  • Rising 8th and 9th graders in the local community can come to the Summer Technology Programs offered at Jefferson each summer. The classes are offered to all students, whether they are planning to attend Jefferson or not.
